STRONG CHARACTERS WHO MARKED HISTORY
CRITIC’S CHOICE
MACBETH, EL SUEÑO DE LAS BRUJAS. By William
Shakespeare, adapted and directed by Carlos Rivas. Generals Macbeth and Banquo
have saved their country from invaders. Upon their return, three witches have
prophesized Macbeth his destiny as future King of Scotland. But Prince Malcolm
is the legitimate heir to the throne, getting in the way of Macbeth’s omen. So
Macbeth and his wife start plotting to seize the throne by killing King Duncan
and blaming his sons as the culprits. Shakespeare’s English classic acquires a
newfound scenic vigour through Rivas’ version, in which Gabriela Toscano plays
Macbeth — a man, as she has done previously in Hamlet — and Vanesa González
portrays Lady Macbeth. The play’s mise-en-scène allows the viewer to observe how
lies are installed as the preferred method in this story that shows a tyrant’s
ruthless and limitless power. The cast is completed by Mercedes Spangenberg,
Cecilia Dellatorre, Dalia Elnecavé, Andrés Portaluppi, Jorge Lifschitz and
Carlos Rivas himself as King Duncan.
